Anthropic raised Claude Code weekly limits by 50% for all paid plans on May 13, through July 13. The increase follows a doubling of 5-hour rate limits on May 6 and removal of peak hour throttling — three capacity expansions in five weeks, funded in part by a new compute deal with SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center.
Anthropic has made three changes to Claude Code capacity in five weeks. The first two happened on May 6. The third followed on May 13. If you’re on a paid plan and haven’t noticed more headroom, you have it.
What changed
On May 6, Anthropic shipped two adjustments at once. Five-hour rate limits on Claude Code doubled across Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise. The peak hour throttle — which had quietly cut available quota on Pro and Max by up to half during busy periods — was removed entirely. API rate limits for Claude Opus models were also increased.
On May 13, Anthropic raised weekly limits by 50% across all those same plans. The increase is live with no opt-in required and applies to every surface where Claude Code runs: the CLI, IDE extensions, the desktop app, and the web. The higher limits run through July 13, 2026.
Why it’s happening now
The practical reason is new compute. Anthropic announced a deal with SpaceX to use the Colossus 1 data center, which gives them access to more than 300 megawatts of capacity — over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs. That compute started coming online during May.
When you provision significant new infrastructure, you have options. You can hold it back and match supply to demand at current prices, or you can push it into the product to deepen adoption. Anthropic chose the latter.
The competitive context is not subtle. OpenAI has been raising limits on Codex developer plans. Codex shipped its /goal autonomous agent loop in April. GitHub Copilot moved to usage-based billing on June 1 and is making frontier models significantly more expensive. Claude Code giving more for the same price makes switching less attractive.
A user on X noted that the three increases together put Claude Code’s rate limits roughly on par with Codex after several months where they lagged behind. That gap was a real reason some engineering teams were splitting workloads across vendors.
What this means for different plans
The 50% weekly increase stacks with the 2x five-hour increase. Both are already applied. The net effect depends on how you hit limits: if you mostly ran into the weekly cap, you now have 50% more. If you hit the per-hour cap, you had that doubled already on May 6. Most heavy users probably hit both depending on the workday.
The July 13 expiration is the open question. Anthropic hasn’t said what happens then. The SpaceX compute isn’t going away, so a rollback to lower limits would be a step backward from the infrastructure they’ve already paid for. The more likely path is that some version of the expanded limits becomes permanent, possibly tied to upcoming pricing or plan restructuring announcements.
